Week Six
We had another wonderful week in the forest! It was a full week with chapel, our walk-a-thon, and a 10 Star Reward. We also have two Hope College students that each spend a couple of hours with us on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you hear your 2nd grader talk about "Miss Kleyn" or "Miss Murphy" these are the two students from Hope that are learning all about 2nd grade Forest School this semester.
Announcements & Reminders:
*Please remember to order lunch by 7am on Monday! Remember you must order in this time frame for the whole week. If you click on the three lines in the top left corner of the blog, there is a quick link to the lunch form.
*We are heading off-campus on Wednesday, October 1 to visit the Holland Farmer's Market. Students are allowed to bring up to $5. Please talk with your child about what s/he may or may not purchase while at the Farmer's Market. Any items purchased need to be able to fit in their hiking bag and will not be consumed at school - all purchases will come home.
*Friday folders are coming home. Please take some time this weekend to look over these pages with your 2nd grader. It's important for him/her to have a chance to share his/her work with you. We talk, at school, about how not all papers can be saved, so maybe choose one or two papers you're really proud of and hang them up for the week. Please send the empty folder back on Monday.
*Homework bags are also due on Monday with a completed reading log and completed math page. Please continue to encourage your child to do his/her homework - this is building responsibility and gently guiding them for 3rd grade expectations and beyond. Thanks for your partnership with this!

Family Math Fun Festival on Sunday, September 28, 2:00-4:00 PM at Hope College. A free event and open to families with children in Grades K-8. Our festival features a wide variety of interactive low-floor, high-ceiling tasks that will engage families in creative problem solving that won't even feel like mathematics! We'll also be giving away goody bags to all participants containing math games for continued practice at home. https://bit.ly/FamilyMathSeptember

Bible: This week we had chapel again! Mr. Russ talked to us, with his puppy, about how the Lord guides us, just as we might guide a pet. Our class will be leading the next chapel on October 8 - parents and grandparents are invited to attend, but we understand that sometimes work schedules and other committments don't allow this.
ELA: In reading this week we're looking at identifying the characters, setting, problem, and solution in our books. We're also focusing in on reading comprehension and doing our best to think while we read. During our writing time we started working on a 'Seed Story'. We went for a hike, found a seed, and are now going to tell the story of our seed. We started with a picture plan and moved into a verbal telling of our story. Now we're writing and using our picture plan to help us draft our seed story.
Math: We started working on adding two numbers together, then moved into adding three numbers, and now we're adding four numbers together! We're making groups of 10 when we can and then adding the remaining numbers to the group of 10. Whew - we're doing some hard math!
Outdoor Learning: We're continuing to look at seeds and plants around Sassafras. We're also spending some time focusing in on the trees around us. We're looking at all the parts of the tree and how all the different parts help the tree grow.
Star Student: Simon was our Star Student this week. We had a lot of fun looking at his poster and pictures. We learned that Simon's favorite sport is football and he wants to be a football player when he grows up. You are a special child of God Simon and we are thankful you're a part of our classroom family!
