Week Five

Wow - our days and weeks are just zooming by! We are really getting into the groove of 2nd grade!

Community Opportunities

The below list of organizations are not necessarily affiliated with Holland Christian Schools but have requested the sharing of these community opportunities

  • Check out this fun family opportunity thanks to our friends at Velo Kids:

  • Family Math Fun Festival on Sunday, September 28, 2:00-4:00 PM at Hope College. A free event and open to families with children in Grades K-8. Our festival features a wide variety of interactive low-floor, high-ceiling tasks that will engage families in creative problem solving that won't even feel like mathematics! We'll also be giving away goody bags to all participants containing math games for continued practice at home. https://bit.ly/FamilyMathSeptember

Bible:  On Thursdays we combine both classes and have Thursday Praise. This is a beautiful time of worship!

We used our Prayer Journals today.  Calm and quiet, talking to Jesus - it's a great way to start a Friday morning.

ELA:  In reading this week we are focusing on figuring out tricky words. We're learning some strategies to use to help us - such as blending the sound, breaking it into syllables, and rereading the sentence to see if it makes sense.

We're practicing our phonics skills:  -ss, -ll, -zz, -ff as well as -nk and -ng words!

In writing we finished our small moment stories.  So we spent time in nature using our senses.  We described what we could see, hear, feel, "taste", and touch.  We used this as a brainstorm for a fun senses writing.

We had a couple of minutes to just be still in God's creation!  After a busy day of learning, this is just what we needed.

Math:  We're working through counting by two's and figuring out odd and even numbers.

Outdoor Learning:  We're having a lot of fun exploring seeds and plants all around Sassafras Ridge! We're noticing a lot of color around us too!

On Tuesday, we had a great off-campus adventure at the ODC.  We found seeds here using a sock on our hand to "sweep" the meadow and see what we could "catch".  We drew pictures of the plants we found!

We had a little time left for some free play!

We used the seeds we found at the ODC and did a seed sort with them.  Then we made more seed/mud balls!

Star Student: Dallas was our Star Student this week. We enjoyed looking at Dallas' pictures and poster. We learned that she enjoys soccer and wants to be a life guard when she grows up. Dallas, you are a special child of God and we are thankful He placed you in our classroom family!
