*After our trail riding last week with Velo Kids, I had some parents reach out about learning more about Velo Kids' summer camps.  Here is the information I received from Mrs. Bierma:

Velo Kids is a Holland, Michigan-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to getting more kids on bikes by promoting healthy, active, and outdoor lifestyles. Through programs like bike camps, adventure clubs, and school-based initiatives, they teach essential cycling skills, safety, and environmental stewardship to children of all ages .

Pedal the Pigeon: kids mountain bike race hosted by Velo Kids at Pigeon Creek Park, offering a supportive and fun introduction to racing for young riders. It is happening Saturday, August 9. More info here: PEDAL THE PIGEON | Velo Kids

Emily Bierma and Jackson will be at each of these events ready to bike with friends and cheer you on. Hope to see you out there!

From the Office:

*Sunscreen

The sun rays are becoming more direct at this time of year! We LOVE the warmth but also want to ensure our children are safe from the UV rays. Would you please talk with your children at home and practice applying the sunscreen of your choice? If you’d like your child to reapply at school, we will teach children how to apply a fresh coating of sunscreen that you send with your child to keep them well protected from the UV rays. Thank you!

*Forest School Field Day

Field Day is quickly approaching!  It's a day that students, teachers and volunteers look forward to every year.  This year field day is Thursday, May 22 and we are looking for parent volunteers to help make this day a success!  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0A49AFAB22A5FA7-56642238-forest

Bible:  We are working our way through learning about how Jesus' disciples told everyone they could about Jesus! We're looking at Community Growing and Kingdom Building for our Discipleship Practices and figuring out how we, 2nd graders, can help grow our community and build God's kingdom.

ELA:  We're doing great work in reading and writing! We're working to build our reading and our writing stamina.

We practiced fluency with performing readers theaters folktales, fairy tales, and fables!

Math:  We're graphing! We're learning to read a graph, to make a graph, and to answer questions and solve equations based off the graph!

Outdoor Learning:  This week we worked with a small group to create a game. We're learning that in a community we don't always get our way, sometimes we need to compromise and have to learn to work together. Today we had a community carnival where we played each other's games. It was a lot of fun!

On Tuesday we went to downtwon Holland to learn about our community.  We visited Pillar Church we were heard the history of the church and learned about how important Pillar is to the community.

After walking to Window on the Waterfront we heard from Rudy's mom about Tulip Time and how that is important to our Holland history and our community!  We even learned a Dutch dance!

Officer Mendoza from Holland Police Department came and talked to us about how they protect our city.

and...we got ice cream! ;)

We had some play time!

Then we talked with the City Manager and he told us about the new ice park that Holland is building.  We also heard from the Parks & Rec Director about learned about all the parks that our city has for the community to enjoy.

We walked to the Farmer's Market area and read a book community and how to support and help one another.

Then we took a bus tour through the Padnos Recycling scrapyard.  It was a lot of fun to see the machines working and learning how this recycling center helps our community.
