Week 7

Our weeks are really flying by!  It's already October!  A new Bible Memory page and October Spelling Words came home in homework bags this week.  These pages should be kept at home and looked at throughout the month.  We added Groups into our daily schedule - this is a great time for ALL second graders to work on improving their own reading and writing skills.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather too!

We started our Monday off with meeting some new Y5 friends from South Side.  Each second grader was partnered up with a Y5er and they completed a nature scavenger hunt and had some play time together.  It was fantastic to see so many of our second graders stepping up to be the "big kids" and teach their new buddy important forest safety rules.

We enjoyed the fall like temps this week in our playspace!

Announcements & Reminders:

*Please remember to order lunch by 7am on Monday!  Remember you must order in this time frame for the whole week.  If you click on the three lines in the top left corner of the blog, there is a quick link to the lunch form.

-Forest School Merch is available for a limited time! Take a peek at the online store for Forest gear if you’re interested!

-Holland Christian Schools will be facilitating an event called Parent University: a conversation around Jonathan Haidt's Book: The Anxious Generation

  • Aim: How, collectively, parents can make choices to counter the smartphone culture and guard their hearts.

  • Focus: We will discuss the harmful effects technology has on our children. We will dive into data that demonstrates the psychological damage that can occur to a child immersed in a phone-based childhood. Join us in these conversations and walk away with a clear call-to-action that will make a difference not only in your child's life but their time here at Holland Christian Schools. Please RSVP at this link or the QR Code provided:

Bible:  This week we continued learning about some of God's special people. We learned about Isaac and Jacob and about how they were faithful followers God.

ELA:  When we book shopped this week we chose one book that we could use to begin a character study on. We found lots of books for our book boxes, but one specific book is what we'll use for our character study. We've practiced finding the character, character traits, and setting in our book.

We're looking at compound words in Phonics.  We worked on a roll and read page with many compound words that we needed to read.

Math:  We are now adding three or even four numbers together! We've also started looking at story problems.

Outdoor Learning:  We planted our bulbs from the Market! Then we journaled about our veggie garden (it's growing very well!) and made some "I wonder..." statements about the flower garden.

We read the book Leaf Man and went on a leaf hunt to create our own leaf creations.

Mrs. Allen, from the upstairs class, brought her microscope and a bee.  We could easily see the fuzziness on the bee and see how the pollen sticks.

Star Student:  Peyton was our Star Student this week! We enjoyed looking at her sparkly poster and pictures. We learned that Peyton likes to play golf, volleyball, and basketball and she's really good at fishing. Peyton, you are a special child of God, we are so thankful you are in our classroom family!
