Week 20

We started our week off with our Y5 buddies! We loved exploring the frozen forest and showing our buddies how to enjoy the forest in all the fresh snow! It was so fun to see them again and to play together!







It was a SNOWY week!  We really enjoyed our time in God's creation this week!  Thank you for helping your child stay warm with all the great gear!

*If you are dropping off late/picking up early - please fill out this FORM so that PR Office knows! Thanks!! 


*Each morning the bell at PR rings at 8:10. This is our signal to line up and get ready to load the bus. By 8:15am the bus has to pull out. Please make sure your child is dropped off and out on the playground by 8:10 so that s/he can get into line and load the bus with the class. I know the roads have made this tricky, but we can't hold the bus past 8:15 otherwise our day gets too delayed. Thank you for understanding.


*I am noticing a decrease in homework bags being returned each Monday. We talked about this at school today, but please remind your child s/he needs to return their homework bag with the completed homework inside each Monday. (Since we don't have school on Monday, homework bags are due on Tuesday of this coming week.)


*Please remember to send your child with a reuable bag for his/her wet mittens/gloves. These are quite wet by the end of the day and need to come home each day to get fully dried at home. We just don't have a good spot to lay out 21 pairs of gloves/mittens to fully dry.


*Friday folders are coming home with papers from our week and with the FS Newsletter. Please send the empty folder back on Monday. Thanks!

Wacky Wednesdays

Things are about to start looking wacky in the Forest! Wacky Wednesdays are beginning January 15! Each Wednesday dress according to the given theme. The class with the highest participation each week will earn a prize party provided by the Parent Board. Check out the list below to see what the themes and prizes are for this year!

  • January 22 - PJ Day

  • January 29 - Neon Day

  • February 5 - Hat Day

The prizes include a hot chocolate party, popcorn party, s’mores party, and a pizza party!

Bible:  We've started exploring Jesus' adult life. We focused this week on the 12 helpers Jesus chose. We will spend time next week looking more closely at each of the 12 disciples.



We learned some new strategies for praying:  look BACK, UP, IN, AROUND, FORWARD.  We tried it out today in our prayer journals.  



ELA:  We took the reading MAP test for the second time this year. We are also moving into a non-fiction unit. We're reviewing non-fiction text features.




Math:  Money, money, money! We are cruising along counting pennies, nickels, and dimes! We also took the math MAP test this week.








Outdoor Learning:  We've started exploring solids, liquids, and gases. We went on a hike and collected berries and other objects from nature. Then we mixed these with water (liquid) and put them outside. The next day they were ice sun catchers (solid)! We hung these up in our Outdoor Classroom to help beautify our space and also observe them over time and see how animals might interact with them.











Here, we are working on trying the opposite!  We made snowballs (solid) and added some food coloring.  We brought them into our classroom and journaled our predictions of what will happen next.  



Fun Friday was full of making BIG snowmen!  We also had each kiddo make a giant snowball and connect them together to form a giant caterpillar!  









Star Student:  Theo was our Star Student this week. It was fun to look at Theo's poster and pictures. We learned that Theo loves sports and wants to be a basketball player when he grows up. You are a special child of God Theo and we are thankful you're a part of our classroom family!

Our weeks are really flying by!  It's already October!  A new Bible Memory page and October Spelling Words came home in homework bags this week.  These pages should be kept at home and looked at throughout the month.  We added Groups into our daily schedule - this is a great time for ALL second graders to work on improving their own reading and writing skills.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather too!  We started our Monday off with meeting some new Y5 friends from South Side.  Each second grader was partnered up with a Y5er and they completed a nature scavenger hunt and had some play time together.  It was fantastic to see so many of our second graders stepping up to be the "big kids" and teach their new buddy important forest safety rules.   We enjoyed the fall like temps this week in our playspace!   Announcements & Reminders : *Please remember to order lunch by 7am on Monday!  Remember you must order in this time frame for th...

Week 1

Wow!  I cannot believe week #1 is in the books!  What a fantastic week we had as we learned more about 2nd grade, Sassafras House, and each other!  I am thankful to be on this adventure with you and your family!  Thank you for entrusting your child to me each and everyday.  We are learning about each other and becoming comfortable in our new learning spaces and with one another!  Please remember that school fatigue is real and you may experience some big emotions with your child this weekend.  It would be helpful to set aside some extra snuggle time to help him/her work through the fatigue of adjusting back to school.  Reminders : *Please remember to order lunch by 7am on Monday!  Remember you must order in this time frame for the whole week.  If you click on the three lines in the top left corner of the blog, there is a quick link to the lunch form.   *If you have not returned batons, green communication folders (with the whit...

Week 5

We've already learned a lot this school year about our Forest School play norms and about our 2nd grade expectations.  The students brainstormed things they felt they could promise to try their best at each and everyday.  We have a Class Promise, a Play Promise, and an Outdoor Learning Promise.  These are great reminders on how we treat one another, treat the space we're in, and share God's love.
